HISTORY
The commercial rivalry between English and Dutch merchants led to a second Anglo-Dutch War in the early 1660s.The Dutch undertook a major building program and one of the largest vessels launched at that epoch was the Zeven Provinciën. Admiral Michiel Adrienszoon de Ruyter made the Zeven Provinciën his flagship and his fleet was duely tested by the British Fleet in the 4 day battle in June 1652. Zeven Provinciën’s rigging was in shreds and de Ruyter was unable to undertake any pursuits. As a consequence, HMS Royal Prince ran aground and was burned by the Dutch on the 12th. On 25 July, the Dutch and English fleets met off North Foreland. The Zeven Provinciën was hit and dismasted and de Ruyter managed to withdraw very swiftly. The Zeven Provinciën’s next moment came during the War of the League of Augsburg, which saw an Anglo-Dutch alliance against France. On 29 May 1692, she was heavily damaged at the battle of La Hogue.
